Okinawa Like a Local: Private Guided Tour and Fishing with Real Okinawan Fishermen

Okinawa has always been Japan's best-kept secret. Stretching across the Pacific between Kyushu and Taiwan, this chain of subtropical islands is home to emerald waters, ancient Ryukyu culture, and a food tradition so distinct it once helped its residents live to 100. It is not quite Southeast Asia, not quite mainland Japan — it is something altogether its own.

For years, international travelers have flocked to Okinawa's beaches without a clear sense of how to experience the islands like a local. That changes now. TASUKI — a local tour company licensed by the Okinawa Governor and based in Nago — has officially launched two new experiences designed to take you deeper into Okinawa than any guidebook can.

The Two New Tours

Tour 1: Okinawa Private Tour — 7 Hours with Your Own Local Guide

Imagine spending an entire day with a local guide who knows every hidden waterfall, every hole-in-the-wall restaurant, and every viewpoint that doesn't appear on any tourist map. That is what TASUKI's Okinawa Private Tour offers.

Starting from ¥75,000 for a group of up to six people, this 7-hour-plus experience is built entirely around you. Into tropical nature? Your guide can take you into the lush forests of Yanbaru, where Ta-Taki Falls offers a cool, quiet escape from the heat. Into history? Explore the legacy of the Ryukyu Kingdom — from the red-lacquered halls of Shuri Castle to the local stories that textbooks leave out. Want to eat your way through the island? Head to Makishi Public Market, where fishermen sell their morning catch and grandmothers debate the best seasonal produce.

What makes this tour stand out is not any single destination — it is the flexibility. The itinerary is shaped around your interests before you arrive. Transportation is included. You move at your own pace. If you want to linger at a beach, you linger. If you spot a shop and want to stop, you stop.

  • Personalized itinerary built around your interests (nature, history, food, or all three)

  • Local guide and transportation fully included

  • A balanced mix of famous sights and lesser-known local spots

  • Optional onsen soak and carefully selected Okinawan cuisine stops

The standard tour runs 7 hours, with hourly extensions available for travelers who want a full-day deep dive.

Duration: 7 hours+

Price: From ¥75,000 per group (up to ~6 people)

Cancellation: Free up to 48 hours before the tour

Tour 2: Half-Day Fishing with a Local Fisherman — The "Sea Legend" Experience

If you have ever wondered what it feels like to step onto a small fishing boat in the morning, cast a line into the Pacific, and spend a few hours on the water with someone who has fished these seas their entire life — this is your chance.

Fishing with local Okinawan fishermen

TASUKI's fishing tour places you on the water with an Okinawan fisherman and an English-speaking guide for a 4-to-5-hour half-day experience. The target fish? Gurukun — the beloved local snapper that appears on almost every traditional Okinawan menu, often deep-fried whole and served with rice. At ¥18,000 per person, all basic gear is provided and no prior experience is needed whatsoever.

The experience is not only about catching fish. It is about the rhythm of it — the slow wait between bites, the conversation with the crew, the feeling of the Okinawan coastline drifting past. Families with children ages 6 and up are welcome. Beginners are not just tolerated; they are genuinely encouraged. The fisherman and guide handle the gear setup and bait, so you simply show up and enjoy.

  • Fishing rod, reel, bait, and life jacket — all provided

  • English-speaking guide throughout the tour

  • Scenic views of Okinawa's coastline from the open water

  • Small-group atmosphere for a personal, unhurried experience

Duration: 4–5 hours (half-day)

Price: ¥18,000 per person

Minimum age: 6 years old

Cancellation: Free up to 24 hours before the tour

Optional Add-On: Catch & Cook — From the Ocean to Your Table

This is where the day becomes unforgettable.

Catch & Cook — From the Ocean to Your Table

After returning to shore, you have the option to take your fresh catch to TASUKI's exclusive partner izakaya — one of the very few restaurants in Okinawa that will actually prepare the fish you just pulled out of the sea. Finding a place that will cook your own fresh catch has become increasingly rare across Okinawa, making this a genuinely one-of-a-kind experience that TASUKI has made possible through a dedicated partnership with a trusted local restaurant.

Your fish is prepared across approximately five dishes, showcasing the full range of what Okinawa's seafood tradition has to offer:

  • Karaage — Gurukun deep-fried Japanese style, crispy on the outside, moist and flavorful inside

  • Sashimi — the freshest possible slices of the day's catch, served with wasabi and soy sauce

  • Nitsuke — fish simmered in a sweet and savory soy-based sauce, one of the most beloved Okinawan preparations

  • Plus additional seasonal dishes prepared by the restaurant chef

Few things in travel compare to sitting down to a meal made entirely from what you caught yourself, just hours earlier, cooked by someone who has spent a lifetime working with Okinawa's seafood.

Catch & Cook price: ¥9,000 per person

Note: This add-on is only available at TASUKI's exclusive partner restaurant. Due to food safety regulations and the increasing difficulty of having privately caught fish prepared in Okinawa, this experience cannot be arranged at other restaurants — it is a genuine TASUKI exclusive.

Why TASUKI?

TASUKI started in Tokyo, where it built a reputation for connecting international travelers with local experiences that are not available through conventional tour operators. The expansion to Okinawa is a natural next step. The company's base in Nago — a working fishing town on the island's northern coast — puts it close to both the ocean and the forests of Yanbaru, and deeply connected to the local community.

All TASUKI guides are English-proficient locals with genuine knowledge of the places they are showing you. Every tour is designed with safety, flexibility, and authenticity as the foundation. TASUKI holds an official Okinawa Governor's tourism license (沖縄県知事登録第2-518号), and operates with full transparency on pricing, cancellation policies, and what is and is not included.

Come Experience Okinawa with TASUKI

Both tours are available to book directly on the TASUKI website. Private tour slots fill quickly, especially during spring and fall when the weather is at its best. We recommend booking at least one week in advance to secure your preferred date.

More Okinawa experiences are currently in development — including culinary tours through Naha's famous public markets and cultural encounters designed to bring Ryukyu history to life. Stay tuned.
